Charity Concerts raise £20,000
The Music Room, Aeolian Court, Chudleigh, has, over the last four years hosted a variety of concerts for various charities and raised an amazing £20,000 to date. Charities who have received donations include: FORCE Cancer, Exeter, Macmillan Cancer Support, British Red Cross, Shelter Box, The Dartington Hall Trust, Families for Children, Zambia, Friends of Bridford Church, and Ideford Church.

This popular venue, created within the private home of Robert and Jackie Hough has recently been featured on BBC 2 ‘s Antiques Road Trip as a place of interest. With a wonderful collection of rare mechanical musical instruments on display many local groups have enjoyed a visit.

Performances are normally accompanied by a selection of refreshments. The ticket price will usually include a glass of wine and light nibbles. For groups visiting the mechanical music collection a cream tea or cake and tea can be offered at an inclusive price.

The Mechanical Music Collection


A private collection of mechanical musical instruments which are displayed within a Devon home recreating an authentic atmosphere of a bygone age. Mechanical music has provided pleasure and entertainment for many hundreds of years.The collection features a variety of music making machines form the early 19th Century through to the present day.

The collection is arranged around a wonderful purpose built room complete with historically important oil paintings. These paintings were commissioned by the The Theatre Royal in Exeter ( demolished in 1962) in 1902 and painted by John Shapland, a prominent local artist. With marvellous acoustics and the special atmosphere of a truly unique gem of a room, enjoying music from this collection of ingenious mechanical musical instruments is sure to be a very memorable and nostalgic experience.

Educational Music Resource


This rare and special collection has broad educational appeal offering something for every age group. It encapsulates, history, technology and musical ingenuity across two centuries. The collection has instruments which play on strings, pipes and reeds; programmed from cardboard books, metal discs, music rolls, pinned barrels, waxed and brass cylinders. Such is the skill and technical development inherent in these various music making devices that all who listen to their music will be fascinated and enthralled. Listened to famous pianists such as Paderewski, Debussy or Scarabin recreating their performance on the Welte reproducing piano and notice how their playing styles contrast with pianist of the modern era.

Past Events

Artists who have performed in The Music Room include Pavel Timofejevsky, Anando Mukerjee, Suzanne Manuell, Elizabeth Jane Baldry, The Beare Trio and regulars, The Olchard Opera.
In 2009, The Music Room hosted a fashion show to raise funds for the Macmillan Trust.
April 2012 saw the staging of The Music Room “Diva and Divo”– a spectacular spring opera concert of celebrated scenes from opera, featuring International singers Suzanne Manuell and Anando Murkejee.
